It’s difficult to know at whom the retaliation is aimed in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Channing Tatum’s agent? The screenwriters’ guild? The good reputation of ninjas? But I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest it’s us, the audience. We spent $150-million on the first G.I. Joe movie, The Rise of Cobra, back in 2009. This is our punishment.
The movie is to subtlety what Merchant-Ivory was to costume drama. In the opening moments, Tatum helps lead a team of U.S. soldiers on an unauthorized incursion across the DMZ into North Korea, Hollywood’s go-to rogue state of 2013. Next, they drop into Pakistan to grab a nuclear warhead from a group of headscarf-clad nasties. (At least, I assume they’re nasty; they are wearing headscarves.) Finally, in a…
